Project - Bootcamp
Workshops and site visits designed to give sixth form students in the UK a full understanding of the dynamics of Climate Change and how the U.N. and other bodies are working to counter them.
Background: Young people are generally interested to understand what is meant by Climate Change and what is being done about it. The subject is however complex and often confusing. In a series of workshops and visits to a working land-fill site in the UK, SCCF invited sixth formers from schools in Scotland (Merchiston Castle) and England (Effingham, Highgate, Channing and Fortismere) to spend a week at our settlor's headquarters to learn directly from professionals working in the field.
I liked how involved we were - activities like the Trading Game encouraged us to be proactive, and I felt that the introduction [to Climate Change] was very thorough. Basil Jennings, Highgate School

Areas covered in the workshops included 'Introduction to Climate Change', 'Market Based Environmental Regulation', and individual case studies such Chinese coal mine methane abatement projects, landfill gas collection. The programmes, which lasted one week, were rounded out with a visit to the Redhill Landfill, where methane gas is being collected and used to generate electricity.
The next step: Having received very positive feedback from the students involved in our two events this summer, we plan to repeat the exercise next year, involving more schools.
