Project Merapi

Project Kasetsart

Background: In early September 2011, a vast area in central Thailand was affected by a huge storm resulting in one of the biggest floods in the last 100 years. The disaster did not only kill a number of people but also destroyed agricultural areas, manufacturing areas, and greatly affected the city of Bangkok.

What we have done: Though our site area was not hit by the flooding, the surrounding areas were and the people suffered greatly. With the help of the Foundation, SSR stepped out to support the people in three nearby areas. Following the advice of the Local Authorities we prepared a ‘relief package’ for distribution to 1,000 households.

The packs consisted of drinking water, food, tissue, soap, and other necessary things for living. Furthermore, we supplied two boats for the people to improve their transport situation. We also supplied fuel for generators to pump flood water back into the river. The Local Authority officers of the areas in question were very supportive and extremely grateful for our assistance.

The next step: We continue to consider how we can aid further, and what short term assistance we could provide in the near future.
